4 Tell-Tale Signs You Should Consider Replacing Your Air Conditioning Unit

Posted on

One of the biggest decisions homeowners have to make is when they should replace their air conditioning system. While replacing your unit is a considerable investment, the same case applies to repairing an old, inefficient system. So, how can you tell that it's time to consider replacing your unit? Here are a few signs to watch out for.

1. You have moisture build-up

As your air conditioner operates, it creates moisture. If your AC is running optimally, it can effectively handle moisture with fewer problems. In instances where your AC moisture build-up is leaking, consider seeking the services of an air conditioning expert. The chances are you have a refrigerant leak that's interfering with the operation of your unit. If left unchecked, the leaks can cause mold growth which poses a great health risk. Depending on the level of damage to your unit, an AC technician may recommend that you replace your air conditioning unit.

2. Your AC doesn't maintain a consistent home temperature

If your unit struggles to maintain your home's ideal temperature, the chances are that it has a damaged motor, cracked duct, clogged filter, or a faulty thermostat. Fluctuation in temperature also means that there are issues with your ductwork. If you don't take measures to ensure proper indoor temperature, your unit will have to work extra hard to perform optimally, leading to increased energy bills. If an air conditioning professional determines that you need extensive repairs to maintain an optimal indoor temperature, they may recommend replacing your system.

3. You constantly have to make repairs

If you have to contact a technician to repair your unit constantly, it may be time to consider a replacement. While your AC unit requires routine maintenance, regular maintenance means that you have an older, ineffective unit. If you don't take steps to handle the issue, the repair costs may end up being more than paying for a new system. It's recommended that you consider AC replacement if you have to spend half the cost of a new AC unit on repairs.

4. Your AC system is approaching its end of life

Another sign you should consider air conditioning replacement is the age of your HVAC unit. When you have an older system, you should expect to have constant failure. Therefore, if your unit is more than ten years old, it's best to consider replacing it. Most AC units will have a label indicating the date of manufacture on the outdoor and indoor units.

Whenever you have a problem with your air conditioning unit, your first thought is to have it repaired. But, it's wise to think about whether your investments are worth it. Sometimes whatever you're spending on repairing your old unit could be better spent on a new one.
